PBS was integral to my childhood. I am the youngest of nine kids, my mom didn’t have the time to give her children the attention we needed and my dad worked long hours. PBS taught me to read and count. My mom took me to the library which gave birth to my love of books but she didn’t teach me how to read… PBS programming did. I entered kindergarten reading at a second grade level and performing math at a third grade level. Today, I’m older (30s) but I’m finishing my masters degree in mathematics. PBS is the reason I love education, classical music, music period, costume dramas, British mysteries and read a lot of literature. Don’t take away culture for kids who were like me. Possibly, I’d be swarming with children, lacking of education and unable to think for myself if I didn’t have Electric Company, Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, etc. in my life. Today, Austin City Limits, Masterpiece theatre, Nova, and Independent Lens bring me great joy.
